Workshop at Leiden University Medical Centre

Dates: 19-22 November 2007

Immunological methods for epidemiological studies followed by specialized analysis for immunological data

Aim: to teach those interested in epidemiological studies to use simple, standardized, feasible, high capacity and cutting edge techniques to understand the immune system at the cellular and molecular level. First part of the course (19,20th Nov) will consist of audio visually assisted teaching of blood culture methods, FACS and cytokine analysis as well as mRNA isolation for gene expression studies. Teaching material will provide the participants with tools to study Th1, Th2, Th17 and Treg cells in cross sectional or longitudinal studies whereby the data can then be used to understand the effect that exogenous factors have on the development of the immune system. Second part of the course (21,22nd Nov) will focus on data generated from immunoepidemiological studies and how to analyze them. Immunological data have characteristics that need special statistical techniques for appropriate analyses. A data set will be used by participants as an example to explore different methods of analysis. Lectures will be given by experts in the field in the morning and practical sessions on data analysis will be held in the afternoon.

GABRIEL Phase Two workshop

St George’s, University of London, 22-23 November 2007

Please Note: Participants seeking instruction and training in genetic epidemiological techniques should register for the Groningen workshop in October, and not this one. The content of the two workshops will not overlap greatly.

Draft Programme available here    Phase 2 Workshop programme (Draft)

A provisional block reservation has been made at a local hotel within walking distance of St George's. Accommodation and travel expenses should be charged to your local GABRIEL budgets.

To assist with forward planning, please send applications directly to Dr David Strachan sgjd950@sgul.ac.uk before 30 September to indicate whether you, or someone else from your research team, wishes to attend this workshop. Do NOT send applications for this workshop to the Project Office. Comments on the draft programme will also be welcome.

Numbers are limited to 50 participants, and if we receive more applications than this, the priority will be to include at least one representative from each phase 2 study centre or consortium.

Subsequent workshops have not yet been finalised, but a list of probable times and locations is available by following the link below. Further information will be posted here as it becomes available, and all queries should be directed to the GABRIEL Project Office.
